Café Au Lait (2023)
Café Au Lait: A Story of NF1 and My Special Spots, written and illustrated by Jessica Boehman for The Children’s Tumor Foundation. (October 2023)
Café Au Lait tells the story of young Enzo’s journey through the early stages of a common disease called NF1 (Neurofibromatosis 1), a genetic disorder that affects 1 in every 3,000 people. It causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and can lead to deafness, blindness, disfigurement, bone abnormalities, learning disabilities, disabling pain, and cancer. Because the illness is generally diagnosed by the time a child is in kindergarten, this book is designed to educate the children, their classmates and friends, and their families, and to give representation to the many children living with this disease.
Check out this video made by Jackson, who is living with NF1, as he reads the book.
